Taiwan's textile suppliers follow the pattern of foreign brands to expand the island's brand market

Some Taiwanese textile manufacturers hope to follow the pattern of the growing popularity of two foreign brands on the island. One is Japan’s Uniqlo and the other is Spain’s Zara, which will promote the development of existing brands in Taiwan, or create new brands.

Uniqlo landed in Taiwan in the fall of 2010 and opened its first store in Taipei Hankuk Department Store. Now there are seven Uniqlo sales outlets on the island. The company plans to add another 14 stores in the first half of this year.

The cheap Spanish brand ZARA opened its first store in Taipei in November 2011, strongly attracting young shoppers on the island. A month later, it opened a second store and is now opening more stores.

Taiwanese textile suppliers have long been committed to establishing their own brands on the island and at home and abroad, including Tainan Enterprise Co., Ltd., Hongyuan Xingye, LEALEA Enterprise Co., Ltd., Shin Kong Industrial, and Texma International Co., Ltd.

Tainan Enterprise was established in 1961 and started as an OEM manufacturer for leading international famous brands such as GAP, Antler, Messi and Talbots. Today's company's TonyWear and Emely brands are already popular in Taiwan and China.

A senior person from Taiwan’s corporate management said that in men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, Mina’a, Taiwanese companies have a strong presence in the Chinese mainland market. In fact, some top brands have become popular and now have the opportunity to become international fashion brands.

Tony Miller entered the Chinese mainland ten years ago and today has about 200 outlets scattered throughout China, making it one of the leading menswear brands in China.

Hongyuan Xingye, a subsidiary of Far East Group, one of the top groups in Taiwan, mainly provides functional fabrics for the leading apparel brands such as Nike, North Face and Columbia under the EU “bluesign” certification.

In recent years, the company has expanded into the field of recycled cloth. Last year, the company began receiving orders from Hagloes, a Swedish casual wear brand, and Lululemon, a famous Canadian brand.

Hongyuan Xingye recently decided to take its "EverSmile" brand to the island market. The company began to promote the brand on the Internet in early October 2011. The company predicts that it will receive 600 million Taiwan dollars (US$20 million) in revenue in the first year.

LEALEA, a leading supplier of polyester yarn, nylon, and chemical fiber fabrics, acquired the "Hike" brand last year, and the company expanded its business to outdoor products. To date, the company has opened nine “hike” stores around the island and plans to open more stores this year. The company also plans to hold a large fashion show in recent months and launched its own casual sportswear brand in February this year.

Xinguang Industry was established in 1975 and specializes in the production of knitted fabrics. Today, it has established several knitting and dyeing factories in China. The company also opened clothing production bases in China, Lesotho, Kenya, and Cambodia.

The company's clothing for the “ZARA” brand in Spain for the most recent period was an OEM. In 2009, the company bought an equity in “easyyoga” and is now the total sales agent for this brand in China. The company plans to produce its own clothes. As an international textile and apparel supplier, Shin Kong adheres to the high quality of its products and is eager to establish its own brand.

Texma has over 30 years of experience in the stores and is now a leading manufacturer of women's woven garments, with production facilities in the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and China. The company’s apparel is sold worldwide, with major customers including Wal-Mart, JCPenny, Ocean, Mango, Poly, and Ralph Lauren.

In recent years, Texma has been developing eco-friendly multi-functional cloths. Recently, Texma has partnered with TzuChi, the largest Buddhist charity organization in Taiwan, to produce clothing using recycled materials. Currently there are more than 50 stores in Taiwan that sell corporate apparel. The company is considering the possibility of selling company apparel in overseas Chinese communities in the future.
