Li Guanqi, a farmer entrepreneur from Huaxian County in Anyang, Henan Province, is credited with inventing soy protein fiber technology. Inspired by an article in a U.S. magazine stating that "plant proteins can be spun into silk," he embarked on a long journey of experimentation. Extracting soy protein and turning it into silk proved challenging. Starting in 1991, Li Guanqi conducted countless experiments—pure spinning, wet spinning, dry spinning, and dry jet wet spinning—and invested tens of millions of dollars over more than a decade. When progress stalled, local banks lent him several million dollars. By 1998, significant breakthroughs were achieved, leading to more than 800 trials before reaching maturity.
A pilot production line was established in 1998 with the help of the county food bureau, raising 60 million yuan. Soybean fiber required new spinning processes to integrate into textile mills. Li Guanqi approached the State Textile Industry Bureau in Beijing, prompting inspections and support from relevant state departments. Soybean fiber production became part of the 2001 national key high-tech industrialization projects. The China National Textile and Apparel Council led efforts involving key academic institutions, research institutes, and over 50 textile enterprises to address critical spinning, weaving, and finishing technologies.
This extensive collaborative effort was nearly unprecedented in China’s textile history. Focus shifted to developing knitwear, shirt fabrics, woolen products, and extending soybean fiber applications. Companies like Ordos, Sunshine, Wishful, Wuxi Cotton, and others successfully blended soybean fiber with other materials, creating high-performance yarns, fabrics, and garments. China imports substantial amounts of chemical fibers and wool annually, making soybean fiber a promising solution.
Rich in resources, China produces over 10 million tons of soybeans yearly. Soybean meal, a byproduct of oil extraction, is mostly used for feed and fertilizer. Developing soybean fiber enhances the value of soybean products, promotes resource utilization, and aids agricultural restructuring. Some extracted protein can still serve as feed or fertilizer.
On December 4, 2002, the first large-scale industrial soybean protein fiber factory began operations. South Korean buyers initially ordered 100 tons and later agreed to purchase 3,500 tons. Italian sales increased 24-fold, while a Japanese firm sought underwriting. European and American merchants showed keen interest. Four soybean fiber production bases now exist with a total capacity of 25,000 tons annually. In April this year, a 10,000-ton soybean fiber production line in Changshu River Tianxian Fibers Co., Ltd. started operations. Soybean fiber clothing is now available in stores.
