sleeve flounce tutorial
Today we’ve got an exciting tutorial for you! Elisabeth from the Advisors Circle is back with another fantastic sewing project. A while back, she shared her Recital Shirt with Ruffles tutorial, and now she’s here to teach us how to transform the Neighborhood Sweatshirt into something truly special. Let’s dive in, Elisabeth!

First things first, before you get started, you’ll need to pick up the Liesl + Co. Neighborhood Sweatshirt + Hoodie pattern and download the free sleeve flounce pattern piece. Once you’ve printed the four pages of the PDF, carefully tape them together to create the full flounce template.
Now that you’ve got everything ready, let’s get to work. Start by cutting out two flounce pieces—one for each sleeve. You’ll want to finish the outer edge of these pieces using either a serger or a zigzag stitch on your sewing machine. Fold the edge under by 3/8 inch and press it well—steam is your friend here! Then, topstitch along the folded edge to secure it in place. This step gives your flounce a clean, professional finish.
Next, position the flounce between the two layers of your sleeve. Make sure the right side of the flounce is facing the right side of the sleeve fabric. If your fabric tends to shift around, you might want to baste the flounce in place temporarily with a 3/8-inch seam allowance. For me, though, pinning worked just fine since I was working with less slippery material.
Once your flounce is securely in place, bring the upper and lower parts of the sleeve together, sandwiching the flounce between them. Sew along the seam with a 1/2-inch seam allowance, following the instructions provided in the pattern. After completing this step for both sleeves, proceed with assembling the rest of the sweatshirt as usual.
Voila! Here’s what your finished product should look like. The addition of the flounce really adds a touch of elegance and femininity to the Neighborhood Sweatshirt. For this particular version, I chose a rayon-blend French terry fabric, which gave the garment a lovely drape. To achieve an oversized, relaxed fit, I decided to size up slightly.
Curious about how the flounce would look in a different fabric? I also experimented with a wool-blend double sweater knit. While this fabric isn’t as fluid as the French terry, the result was equally stunning—and surprisingly slouchy. In hindsight, I could have stuck with my usual size, but the outcome still exceeded my expectations.
Isn’t it amazing how such a simple detail can completely change the vibe of a piece? Whether you go bold or subtle, adding a flounce to your sweatshirt is a fantastic way to inject some personality into your wardrobe. So why not give it a try? Grab the pattern (you can choose between paper or digital formats), download the free flounce pattern piece, and let your creativity shine through.
We can’t wait to see what you come up with! Easy, fun, and adorable—what’s not to love?
