Hong Kong garment sales rose 14.3% in the first two months of this year

The interim value of total retail sales in February 2011 was estimated at HK$29.2 billion (HK$, the same below), which represented an increase of 8.6% over the same month of the previous year. After deducting price changes during the period, total retail sales in February 2011 increased by 5.1% from the same month of last year. The price deflator used is selected from related items in the consumer price index.

The revised value of total retail sales in January 2011 was estimated at 37.6 billion yuan, up 28.1% from January 2010, while total sales volume increased by 23.6%.

Compared with the same period in 2010, the value of total retail sales in the first two months of 2011 increased by 18.8%, while total sales volume increased by 14.7%.

Analyzed by the main categories of stores, the total sales in the first two months of 2011 compared with the same period of the previous year, the largest increase in the number of miscellaneous consumer durable goods was sales, which rose by 99.9%.

This was followed by jewellery, watches and clocks, and valuable gifts (volume increase of 29.7%), electrical appliances and photographic equipment (up 20.4%), footwear, related products and other clothing accessories (up 20.2%), clothing (up 14.3%), and automobiles. And auto parts (up 13.0%), miscellaneous consumer goods (up 12.7%), department stores (up 7.8%), furniture and fixtures (up 6.0%), supermarket goods (up 4.9%), and fuel (up 2.4 %).

For the three months ending February 2011, the seasonally adjusted total retail sales increased by 2.7% compared to the previous three months.
